America’s Cup
Friday 16 June, wrapped in a sheet of white cloth that gave nothing away, the +39, the latest jewel from Soleri, started its journey.
From the shipyards of Alfonsine the Italian vessel “Ita 85” then embarked from Leghorn on its voyage to Valencia in Spain to take part in the most famous competition in the world, the prestigious America’s Cup and to take part in the required Acts of the America’s Cup, number 32, the first in Europe since 1851.
The +39 designed by the engineer from Ravenna Giovanni Ceccarelli, is an avant-garde vessel on which the entire team of Fabio Soleri has worked.“It was built – said the entrepreneur Soleri – on commission from the Sicilcraft and Dannaval yards of Palermo, but it was our expertise in Alfonsine that provided all the technical and constructional support needed to build her”.
It is an extremely sophisticated model on account of the technology, of aeronautic origin, used – added Soleri – owner of the shipyards in Alfonsine and president of the Consorzio Export Nautico of Ravenna, “and we are extremely proud to have accepted this undertaking which enables us to take part in an international project of such great prestige, which is also important for the image of our local nautical industry.”
The construction of the hull required 35 thousand hours of work, with 2,500 kilos of carbon fibre, to which another 1,500 kilos were needed for the
female
mould. Overseeing the work in the yard managed by Fabio Soleri were Sebastiano Rech Morassutti and Antonie Le Villan, with the cooperation of Gabriele Uboldi.“Ita 85” will compete for the Italian consortium, or to be precise, for the “+39” consortium of Lake Garda-Sicily.
The challenge for this concern came from the Gargagno Sailing Club located on Lake Garda, through its president Lorenzo Rizzardi.
Work on the hull started in great secrecy in mid-September in the anonymous sheds of Alfonsine, the main designer Giovanni Ceccarelli lead a team of 15 technicians and 9 designers.
Ceccarelli, born in 1961 and engineer, is a veteran of the America’s Cup: he had the same role in 2003 in New Zealand with Mascalzone Latino. For the + 39 he was assisted by a further 8 engineers of various nationalities.
“The new regulation of the 32nd edition of the America’s Cup and the different weather conditions compared to previous competitions in Auckland – said Ceccarelli – have made it possible to include some new ideas in the vessel, for example in the lines and hull tailpieces, and the shape of the hull, the boom and the helm”.
The exit from the Soleri was coordinated by the director of the consortium of Lake Garda-Sicily Cesare Pasotti.
“For the boatbuilding of Ravenna, as confirmed by Fabio Soleri, this represents a great reason to be proud and for the future we are planning other prestige boats” – said the president of the Consortium in conclusion.
